Are you a fan of Hallmark Movies & Mysteries? How about Hallmark romances? If so, then you’ll love this new book from the Honey Creek Series by Jodi Thomas.

Picnic in Someday Valley is the second book in the Honey Creek series and combines just the right about of mystery and romance.

Picnic in Someday Valley

Set in a small town with a cast of lovable, but quirky characters, Picnic in Someday Valley offers exactly what you love about Hallmark. With an extra dose of the romance (think PG-13 verses PG), but nothing too erotic, Thomas delivers a novel with several story lines that work together.

If you haven’t checked out the first book in the series, you can see my post on that book HERE. In fact, I recommend you read it first because so many of the characters in the first book return for the second.

And, who doesn’t love that?

I usually don’t do this, but I did want to provide a trigger warning for some readers. The main conflict in this novel arises from a serial rapist on the loose. That said, Thomas only writes books with happily ever after’s and this is no different!

Here’s a brief summary of Picnic in Someday Valley:

After her ex-boyfriend tried to destroy Honey Creek’s courthouse, Marcie Latimer hides her life and her shame in neighboring Someday Valley. Unsure if she’ll ever be able to face anyone again, let alone build a new life, Marcie sings away her blues at Bandit’s Bar. The quiet cowboy who visits every night she plays surprises Marcie, offering her comfort and safety when so many have turned their backs on her.

Piper Mackenzie and Texas Ranger Colby McBride protected the town of Honey Creek against destruction, but in the months since the almost-tragedy, things between them haven’t settled down like the rest of the town.

And, Pecos Smith is thrilled about his new wife and the baby on the way, even if everything isn’t as perfect as it looks. He’s determined to love Kerrie through the triumphs and the trials–he just hopes she feels the same.

As trouble returns to Someday Valley, Marcie, Piper, Colby and Pecos will have to come together once more to band against evil and hope, despite the odds, that love will conquer again.

Picnic in Someday Valley Book Club Recipe and Food Ideas:

Picnic in Someday is a novel with so much food mentioned that it was a little hard to get everything down! I love books with lots of sensory details like smells and tastes of food. Don’t you?

Here are a few food ideas from the pages of Picnic in Someday Valley:

  • Chapter 6 – Jesse picks up pumpkin and apple cinnamon scones at the bakery
  • Chapter 12 – Colby and Sam talk over donuts (cherry-glazed) and coffee
  • Chapter 17 – Lunch at Mr. Winston’s – peach cobbler
  • Chapter 23 – Breakfast after the storm–Kerrie makes tiny cinnamon rolls with pecans on top
  • Chapter 25 – Jesse goes to the bakery to see Adalee but she’s gone – a whole coconut pie and donut holes
  • Chapter 26 – Piper makes plans to help Marcie find a place – chicken salad at the Honey Creek Café
  • Chapter 31 – Brand and Marcie go to the Pint and Pie Bar – pizza loaded with meat and cheese
  • Chapter 43 – Jesse makes the kids breakfast burritos and juice after Star stays to help. Later, Star cooks a quiche and salad for dinner.
  • Chapter 48- Marcie makes Brand breakfast – biscuits, bacon, and eggs (or check out this French Toast Sandwich from the last book in the series!)

In case you are new here, for almost every book I create a companion recipe in addition to listing all the food options from the pages of the novel.

For Picnic in Someday Valley, I chose scones. I really loved Jesse and Adalee’s relationship and I hope they make another appearance in the series.

Jesse loves Adalee’s scones. He specifically chooses her pumpkin and apple cinnamon scones when he visits the bakery. While I love pumpkin, it’s more of a seasonal flavory, so I decided apple cinnamon was the way to go.

And, if you noticed in the list above, many of the foods mentioned are breakfast foods, so it’d be great to host a breakfast-themed book club and include a few.

Like I mentioned, you can check out the French Toast Sandwiches I made for the first book, Breakfast at the Honey Creek Cafe, to get you started!
