In this post, I’ll review the premise of Dear Edward and share some great food ideas for your book club based on the book.

Dear Edward

Here’s a brief summary of Dear Edward:

Edward Adler, his older brother, and his parents board a plane from Newark to Los Angeles headed towards a new life, new jobs, and a new future, but the promise of what they hoped for is cut short when the plane, along with its 183 other passengers crashes into a barren field in Colorado.

Edward is the sole survivor.

With alternating timelines between that fated day, featuring vignettes of the various passengers aboard the flight, and Edward’s life after the crash, Dear Edward asks some of life’s hardest questions: “When you’ve lost everything, how do you find the strength to put one foot in front of the other? How do you learn to feel safe again? How do you find meaning in your life?”

Dear Edward Food Ideas:

After the crash, Edward struggles to find his appetite again, a common problem survivors face after a tragedy.

His Aunt Lacey works hard to help him maintain his health despite it all. She drags him to the store after the doctor gives her permission to let Edward eat whatever he will eat and Edward chooses Twix candy, Jordan’s favorite, salt and vinegar chips, his mother’s favorite, and some dry cereal.

I decided to combine those two favorites into a desert in honor of Jordan and Jane by making Twix Bars with Potato Chip “Salt.”

There are plenty of other food ideas from Dear Edward, though, and here are a few suggestions:

  • Part 1 Chapter 4 – Twix bar, Jordan’s favorite, and salt and vinegar chips, his mother’s favorite, after the doctor says Edward is losing too much weight
  • Part 1 Chapter 8 – Lasagna and salad – eating dinner when Lacey announces Edward’s family’s things will be arriving from the movers
  • Part 2 Chapter 1 – Brisket, burgers, pasta Bolognese, steamed clams – Bruce reminiscing cooking with Jordan after Jordan announces he’s now vegan
  • Part 2 Chapter 10 – A hummus sandwich, applesauce, and carrot sticks – Edward envisions seeing Jordan in the woods behind the house and wants to do something for him so he makes and eats Jordan’s last meal from the plane (Also the meal where Jordan announces he is a vegan to his father on the plane)
  • Part 2 Chapter 10 – Pork chops, broccoli and mashed potatoes – the dinner where Edward announces he’s decided to become vegan in honor of Jordan

The homemade Twix Bars I created are like your traditional cookie bars, but the cookie (a shortbread in this case) is then topped with a caramel layer and a chocolate layer.

Garnished with finely smashed potato chips instead of the usual sea salt, the bars are the perfect food for Dear Edward.

If you are familiar with Millionaire Bars, you’ll recognize these as they are basically the same thing.

So, if you are looking for food suggestions for Dear Edward, I think your book club will be happy to try these scrumptious and diet defeating Twix Bars with Potato Chip Salt!
